European Leagues of Institutes of the Arts – Amsterdam, Netherlands

In response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the European League of Institutes of the Arts partnered with the Abakanowicz Foundation to create the UAx Platform and Abakanowicz Fellowship and Mentorship programs. The platform leverages ELIA’s network of globally connected higher arts institutions and academies to form a sister school program allowing Ukrainian students to transfer to one of thirty schools to continue their studies. This initiative is in solidarity with thousands of art students, staff, and teachers who no longer feel safe in Ukraine. The UAx Abakanowicz Fellowship and Mentorship programs fund 25-30 students a year with individual scholarships, professional mentor pairings, and a peer community. This initiative aims to empower war-affected artists to carry out one of their most important responsibilities—creating work in the face of oppression. Magdalena Abakanowicz, alongside numerous artists from her generation, experienced forced relocations, displacements, invasions, occupations, and endured political and pedagogical oppressions. Preserving the narratives of extraordinary individuals like Magdalena Abakanowicz ensures that the next generation of artists, including the Abakanowicz Fellows, are inspired and emboldened to carry on with their artistic endeavors, especially in times of struggle.

The Abakanowicz Research Center (ARC) at the Chicago History Museum acknowledges Magdalena Abakanowicz’s commitment to truth and diversity in history and her deep association with the city of Chicago, where she is best known for her public work, Agora (2006), in Grant Park. Admission to ARC is free and open to authors, educators, scholars, students, photo researchers, and others. The Abakanowicz Research Center’s catalog, called ARCHIE, is now online and a part of the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries of Illinois (CARLI), a statewide network of nearly 200 academic and research libraries.
